2 Fishermen Confirmed Positive for COVID-19 in Negros Oriental

NEGROS ORIENTAL – Two (2) new cases of coronavirus or COVID-19 were recently recorded in the province.

Several provinces in the Philippines have recorded cases of coronavirus or COVID-19. In totality, the Department of Health (DOH) has confirmed 18,086 cases of the disease recorded in the country as of this writing.

Out of the total number, 3,909 patients have recovered from the said disease. Unfortunately, 957 patients died in the battle against coronavirus.

Currently, the entire Philippines is under a community quarantine due to the outbreak. The high-risk areas are under a General Community Quarantine (GCQ) starting today, June 1, while most parts of the country are under a Modified General Community Quarantine (MGCQ).

One of the provinces under a GCQ now is Negros Oriental. For more than a month until recently, it had no active case of COVID-19. However, recently, two (2) new cases of the disease were confirmed in the province.

Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, the two (2) new patients of COVID-19 in Negros Oriental are both fishermen. One of them (1) is from Ayungon in the province while the other is living in Samboan, Cebu.

According to Assistant Provincial Health Officer Dr. Liland Estacion, the patients are among the 150 fishermen from Palawan. They had a contact with a person who tested positive for the disease.

Based on the report, upon getting off the vessel, the fishermen were tested for coronavirus. They tested positive for the disease but are showing no signs.

Currently, the patients are confined in the COVID Ward of the provincial hospital. It was last May 21 when their swab samples were taken and sent to a Cebu laboratory.

The new cases of COVID-19 recorded in the province brings the total cases in the province to six (6). Currently, the borders between Neg. Oriental and its neighboring province, Neg. Occidental, is still close.
