What Is Gugo - Traditional Shampoo Made In The Philippines

Before shampoos became mainstream and blasted into the media through advertisements, our ancestors used what they call “Gugo”.

Gugo has been widely popular for its benefits for hair. Along with this, it was a highly affordable and abundant ingredient. It’s used to stimulate growth and strengthen hair.

The method of creating this type of traditional shampoo starts with taking the bark of a “Gu-go” harvested from a vine only found in mountainous areas.

Afterward, the bark is skinned and stripped and hammered into rectangular strips. Next, the strips are sun dried taking up to 5 hours depending on the heat of the sun.

Aside from shampoo, Gugo is also used as traditional medicine for its array of benefits. Native Filipinos have also used the method of soaking the bark in cold water before processing it into different products.
