Inmates of New Bilibid Prison Receive 500 Mattresses From An Anonymous Donor
ANONYMOUS DONOR – Inmates at the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City received 500 mattresses from an anonymous donor.
The New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City is managed by the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) under the Department of Justice (DOJ). It is the main insular penitentiary in the Philippines.
Lots of inmates die every year because of overcrowding and dehydration. Currently, New Bilibid Prison house 16,747 inmates.
Recently, a priest shared some good news about the inmates at the New Bilibid Prison. He said hundreds of them will sleep better after an anonymous donor gave them 500 new mattresses.
The executive director of the Philippine Jesuit Prison Service Foundation, Inc. (PJPS), Father Eli Lumbo SJ, shared the story on his FB account on Sunday, April 19.
The priest said he received a message asking if the inmate really sleeps on cardboard boxes. “I replied that this is true and in fact there are many who do not have card board boxes o sleep on. There are many who sleep on the floor,” he said.
Fr. Eli said several inmates have asked him to bring cardboard boxes so they can sleep on it. He said the anonymous donor asked him how many mattresses were needed.
The donor told him that 500 mattresses will be delivered. He said the employees of BuCOr and inmates were “happy and amazed at the donation.”
“A number were teary eyed… Together with mattresses we brought gallons of alcohol, packs of biscuit and bottled water. God does love the prisoners. God knows their hardship. God knows their pain. They are still His children after all,” he said.
“In this Easter season, I feel that God’s message is ‘I cannot rest knowing that my children are in need.’ Truly, Jesus is risen! Alleluia!!!” he added.
