13.6 Million Filipinos Are Going Hungry Due to Delayed Cash Assistance, IBON executive director Sonny Africa  Says

IBON executive said that around 13.6 million poor Filipino families are going hungry due to the delayed distribution of cash aid.

IBON’s executive director Sonny Africa said that millions of poor families in the Philippines are going hungry due to the delayed distribution of the government’s financial assistance during the quarantine period.

The enhanced community quarantine affects the jobs and livelihoods of millions of Filipino people. The quarantine order restricts mass gatherings, mass transport, and suspend the operations of many business establishments.

Sonny Africa also stressed out that President Duterte plans to use ‘martial law-like’ measures instead of lifting up the quarantine orders and feeding everyone since the lockdown is on its fifth week.

“Millions of Filipino families are going hungry five weeks into the military lockdown. Instead of dropping everything and feeding everyone, the Duterte government would rather use ‘martial law-like’ measures to contain mounting social unrest,” Africa said.
