UST Engineer’s Invention Aims To Help Frontliners In Dealing w/ Patients

An engineer from UST invented this robot

University of Santo Tomas (UST) engineer invented a robot that would help frontliners in dealing with COVID-19 patients.

With the increasing number of confirmed coronavirus patients in the Philippines, Engineer Anthony James Bautista invented the manual Logistic Indoor Service Assistance (LISA). This telepresence robot is consists of a tablet and a mobile base and it can be controlled by a remote.

In the Facebook post of the UST Hospital Department of Medical Education and Research, the tablet will be used for the communication between the health worker and the patient. This can be done through internet-based platforms such as Skype, Viber, and FaceTime.

Aside from communication, the robot can also be used in delivering medicines to the patient as it can serve as a compartment box. LISA was already deployed at the hospital of the university for a pilot run last April 9.

Engineer Bautista said in an interview that the LISA has received positive feedback from doctors after the pilot run. However, he said that there are still some modifications that are needed to be done with the robot.

The inventor specifically mentioned that the wheels of LISA must be changed in order to have a smoother navigation. He also shared that the major challenge that he faced when creating LISA was the limited components that he can use because of the enhanced community quarantine.

“I only used yung mga (the) readily available components in my laboratory and that is where we came up with this design of the LISA robot,” Engineer Bautista said.

Despite that difficulty, he is glad to share that some suppliers already pledge that they will provide the needed components. The Department of Science and Technology also expressed support to this project, based on the report from Inquirer.
