According to Inquirer, the said air pollution is the result of burning fossil fuels such as coal, as, and oil, primarily. This also results in economic losses that worth at about ₱304 billion or $6 million, yearly.

The published study came from Greenpeace Southeast Asia and the Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air, which also states that burning fossil fuels results to the premature deaths of about 4.5 million worldwide annually worsened with toxic pollutants that resulted in the rise in acute and chronic diseases.

Worldwide, there is a cost of about $2.9 trillion or $8 billion daily. This is equivalent to at about 3.3 percent of the world’s GDP (gross domestic product).

Aside from that, the study also showed that air pollution from fossil fuels also severely affect children in low-income nations, where about 40,000 of those die before they reach 5 due to exposure to the pollution. This can also deliver a blow to productivity.

As per the report, globally, exposure to PM2.5 or tiny particles that have the ability to travel deep into the respiratory system, caused the increase of work absences or yearly, 1.8 billion days of missed work.

Greenpeace Philippines added that the study also underscored the urgency of shifting away from fossil fuel use and transitioning to renewable energy sources like solar and wind power.
