ABS-CBN Franchise Issue: PNP Press Corps Expresses Support To TV Network

PNP Press Corps Expresses Support to ABS-CBN amid Franchise Revocation Issue

ABS-CBN FRANCHISE ISSUE – PNP Press Corps expressed their support to ABS-CBN amid franchise revocation issue.

Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte accused the media network ABS-BN of refusing to air his political ads in the 2016 election and for bias reporting. The country’s leading broadcast network’s franchise is set to expire on March 30, 2020.

The 74-year-old president told the executives to just sell the company. Lots of celebrities reacted to the issue and appealed to him to allow the Kapamilya network to renew its franchise because thousands of people will lose their jobs.

On Monday, Solicitor General Jose Calida asked the Supreme Court to revoke ABS-CBN’s franchise renewal. He claimed that the tv network lets foreigners control the network and it also engages in “highly abusive practices” like Rappler.

Yesterday, the Supreme Court released a statement ordering the ABS-CBN to comment on Calida’s plea. The high court gave the tv network ten (10) days to comment on SolGen’s franchise revocation plea.

On Wednesday, the Philippine Nationa Police (PNP) Press Corps expressed its support to the tv network that faces the quo warranto petition filed by Jose Calida. Its statement was posted on ABS-CBN’s twitter page.

The PNP Press Corps expressed “serious concern” of the case filed by SolGen Jose Calida. They called it an “attempt to stop the operation” of the media network.

“Amid various arguments pertaining to this matter, all of these still boil down to the issue of press freedom which is enshrined in the Constitution, and which is part of the real meaning of democracy.”

“We stand with our fellow media workers at ABS-CBN, we stand for fair treatment and due process, and we stand for freedom of the press,” it added.
