WHO Declares Wuhan Virus As Global Emergency
WUHAN VIRUS NOW GLOBAL EMERGENCY – After its deliberation on Thursday, the World Health Organization has declared the Wuhan coronavirus as a global emergency.
The Virus has run rampant in mainland China and had infected over 8000 people. In addition, the death toll for the virus had already reached 200.
Because of this declaration, Global efforts and more collaboration would be possible along with greater funds to fight off the virus.
According to an article from ABS-CBN, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO director-general, the declaration was not a loss of confidence in China.
“Our greatest concern is the potential for the virus to spread to other countries with weaker health systems”.
The main reason is not because of what is happening in China, but because of what is happening in other countries
However, despite the emergency declaration, the WHO is not recommending any restrictions on travel ban or trade at this time. Instead, countries should implement evidence-based health policies.
In addition, the WHO called for an acceleration in initiatives to develop vaccines and treatments. They also emphasized that help should be given to countries with weaker health systems who might not handle the virus outbreak.
Previously, the vote to declare the virus as a global emergency was split 50-50. But, due to the increased number of cases and the number of affected countries, the declaration had been made.
The WHO defines a global emergency as an “extraordinary event which is determined to constitute a public health risk to other States through the international spread of disease and to potentially require a coordinated international response”.
