The term is a medieval Latin name which is derived from the Illyrian tribe of Albanoi (Ἀλβανοί) or Albani (Albanët in Albanian). This was recorded by an Alexandrian geographer and astronomer named Ptolemy, who made a map in 150 AD which shows the city Albanopolis which is northeast of Durrës.
