Chinese Scientists Experimenting With Genetically Edited Babies Jailed
GENETICALLY EDITED BABIES – Chinese Scientists that claimed that he was successful in experimenting with genetically edited babies were convicted because of his research.
The scientist named He Jianku was convicted of practicing medicine without a license. In addition, he was fined 3 million yuan or roughly $430,000.
The sentence was given by a court in the southern city of Shenzhen, China. Adding to this, two of his associates involved in the project were convicted with lesser sentences and fines.
According to a report from Inquirer, the three convicted researchers pursued fame and profits. They also violated Chinese regulations on scientific research.
Aside from this, they also fabricated ethical review documents. The court also stated that the three were involved in the births of three gene-edited babies to two women.
According to reports, all three scientists pleaded guilty. He Jianku also stated that he had used a tool called CRISPR to try to prevent a gene that allows AIDS to enter a cell.
The CRISPR tool has been utilized and tested in adults to treat diseases. But, the majority of the scientific community had denounced He’s work.
According to them, the research was unethical and unnecessary. This was because any genetic changes could potentially be passed on to future generations.
The identity of the children has not been released yet. However, it was still uncertain whether or not the experiment was successful.
Before he established a lab at the Southern University of Science and Technology of China, He was studying in the U.S.
His two colleagues, Zhang Renli and Qin Jinzhou received fines and prison sentences. Zhang got 2 years of jail time and fined 1 million yuan while Qin received an 18-month sentence and a 500,000 yuan fine.
