Oftentimes, the art in itself is valued based on the interpretation of the audience. Or are we simply at a point where anything can be considered art?

This week, an artist duct-taped a banana to a wall. That’s right, this is what art has become right now. Taping fruit to walls. But, pray tell, this isn’t your ordinary banana duct-taped to a wall.

This particular piece of art by Maurizio Cattelan was priced at a whopping $120,000. The gallery that housed the work of art, Galerie Perrotin said that it had three editions with two sold for about $120,000.

Cattelan’s piece was entitled, “Comedian”. It featured a banana bought in a Miami Grocery store and a single piece of duct tape.

However, this was a situation where a piece of art, met a hungry artist. Cattelan’s work was unceremoniously taken off the wall at the Art Basel Miami Beach and was eaten by performance artist David Datuna in front of his a crowd.

He posted the video of him eating the Banana on his Instagram with the caption:

Because of his performance, people flocked around him. Afterward, we could see a woman walk up to him saying “Are you crazy? This is so stupid sir“. The woman then asked for his name and said: “I’ll get your name, then we’ll do what we need to do”.

However, according to an article by CNN, the organizers themselves said that the Banana can be replaced if needed. The gallery even posted a video on their Instagram with the founder, Emmanuel Perrotin removing a banana from the wall and eating it himself.

According to the artist, the banana is a “symbol of global trade, a double entendre, as well as a classic device for humor“. He added that artists turn mundane objects into vehicles that offer delight and critique.
