According to SunStar, the encoder was identified as Jon Nathaniel “Tonix” Lopez, aged 35, from Xavier Ecoville in Barangay Lumbia.

Lopez sold 55 pieces of ₱1,000 fake bills to a buyer in exchange for cash worth ₱10,000.

Commander of Police Station 3 Major Julius Clark Macariola reported that during the operation, a test buy was made on Sunday (December 1) where officers also bought counterfeit bills, which was confirmed by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP).

For weeks, Lopez just started distributing the said counterfeit money. Macariola further said that it is possible especially this holiday season.

“…come and go ang mga consumers, mao ng gabaligya siya kay mas dako ang chance nga dili mabantayan nga fake ang kwarta nga gibayad”

(The consumers come and go. That is why he is selling because there is a bigger chance that counterfeit money would go unnoticed when paying)

As per the report, the commander urged the public to stay vigilant at all times and to report immediately to the police should they found someone selling fake money.

Lopez is detained and will be filed against for violation of the Article 168 of the Revised Penal Code due to the illegal possession and use of false/counterfeit notes.
