Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Clean Tourist City Award declares the city as the cleanest urban centers in Southeast Asia. Iloilo City’s beautification efforts paid off as it successfully bagged the ASEAN Clean Tourist City Award.

In an article of Panay News, the award is given to cities that have endeavored to beautify their public spaces, improved the environment and sanitation, enhanced urban spaces and promoted man-made and natural attractions, according to Rebecca Villanueva-Labit, director of the Department of Tourism’s (DOT) Office of Tourism Standards and Regulation.

For almost a decade, Iloilo City has undergone massive infrastructure and green development projects when it vied for ASEAN’s Clean Tourist City Standard Award in September. Indeed, their efforts paid off. Iloilo City won the award, the city will obtain help to further improve the city’s tourism quality and increase its marketing competitiveness.

“This warms my heart because having a clean city for my beloved Ilonggos and our tourists to feel safe is what I have worked hard for, for the past 5 months in office. We have reactivated the beautification team and task force boltahe to maintain our broken street lights and the additional personnel to help clean our city,” Treñas said on his Facebook.

The award will be handed over to the city in an awarding ceremony slated on January 16, 2020, in Brunei Darussalam. Iloilo Mayor Jerry Treñas will receive the award in behalf of the city.
