6-Month-Old Baby Dies at Evacuation Center in Quake-StrickenCotabato
MAKILALA, NORTH COTABATO – A six-month-old baby passed away at an evacuation center in quake-stricken North Cotabato due to dehydration.
Last week, Cotabato and its nearby provinces in Mindanao have been struck by powerful temblors. The strong earthquakes cause severe damage to numerous buildings and establishments in the area.
The major temblors displaced thousands of residents and killed around 21 people in the quake-affected areas. The Philippine government and other agencies immediately conduct rescue operations and brought the affected residents in various evacuation centers.
Recently, the local health officials announced that a six-month-old baby died at an evacuation center in Makilala, North Cotabato. The baby girl showed symptoms of severe diarrhea while staying at the evacuation center in Barangay New Bulatukan in Makilala.
Municipal health officer doctor Georgina Sorilla said that the baby was rushed by her parents and some health personnel to the nearest hospital but was declared dead on arrival. She also explained that the lack of safe drinking water worsens the victim’s health condition.
“The lack of safe drinking water and basic daily needs of evacuees in makeshift shelters also added to the child’s deteriorating condition,” Sorilla said.
