Duterte Says He Has A Neuromuscular Condition During Moscow Meeting

RODRIGO DUTERTE – President Rodrigo Duterte revealed that he has a condition called myasthenia gravis during the Filipino Community meeting in Moscow on Saturday.

The condition that the President has is a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disease. According to a report from ABS-CBN, Duterte stated that his condition affects the muscles in his eyes.

The president even joked about his condition. He said that even though he’s looking at you, his other would drop.

Duterte continued and said that one of his eyes is smaller. He laughed as he joked about one of his eyes going its own way.

As per the report, Duterte said that he got the disease from his grandfather. Afterward, he said that he really believes in genetics, and what his grandfather has, he inherited.

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, Duterte’s disease causes weakness in the skeletal muscles. These are the ones responsible for breathing and moving body parts.

One of the most distinctive features of the disease is muscle weakness that worsens after periods of activity. However, after periods of rest, these muscles improve as well.

In the President’s case, the type that could affect his control of the eye and eyelid movement. Some cases even cause loss of control of facial expressions, chewing, talking, and swallowing.

As of the moment, there is no cure for the disease. Although, with current therapies, most cases of myasthenia gravis are not “grave”.

There are already treatments available that could control symptoms and often allow people to have a high quality of life. The majority of the people that have this condition live a normal life expectancy.
