TAIWAN FACTS – Here are some facts about the culture and customs of Taiwanese to further understand them and to show respect.

The culture of Taiwan is blend of traditional Chinese practices, modern commercialism, and a hint from the Japanese. And before going to this country and to other places, it is good to first learn their customs and etiquettes before visiting.

Now, here’s a quick peek about it:

  • In greeting somebody, a slight bow of head or a wave and a friendly “hi” will do. “Ni hao ma?” (how are you?), “hai!” (hey!), “hao jiu bu jian!” (it’s been a while!) or “chi bao le ma?” (have you eaten?) – some Taiwanese terms that come in handy.
  • When giving or receiving a present always use your both hands to accept or in giving out. Also, reserve your excitement at home and open the gift if the giver is not around. And avoid giving things made in Taiwan.
  • Avoid to give these things as presents:
    • Handkerchief – as it indicates that something will come up to make the person cry
    • Clock – it sounds like attending a funeral
    • Shoes to old people – this signifies of sending them to heaven
    • Umbrella to Boyfriend or girlfriend – it indicates that you are ending the relationship
  • It is a huge taboo to stick the chop sticks together vertically into the bowl.
  • Hosts do put foods on their visitor’s plates, thus, don’t be surprise or even try to refuse.
  • If a grandma is standing in front of you, offer your seat whether it is on the bus, MRT or train. Or else, you will be stared at or even scolded.
  • Don’t give tips in restaurants, hotels or taxis ad it is offensive. But it is okay to give a tip in a bar.
