What do you need to know about Thai customs before visiting Thailand?

THAI CUSTOMS – Here are some of the things that you must know first if you are planning to go to Thailand for the first time.

One of the most famous travel destinations is Thailand which is known for elephants, their scrumptious street foods, tropical beaches, opulent royal palaces, ancient ruins, and ornate temples displaying figures of Buddha. And if you are going there for the first time, here are some Thai customs you might need you to know.

  • Wai Greeting – This a traditional greeting in Thailand which means respect. There are three types of Wais such as thumbs on chin for colleagues and friends, thumbs on nose for someone older, and on forehead for Buddha, monk, or king.
  • Point Feet – Never show the bottom of your feet to anyone as this lowest and dirtiest part of the body indicates extreme rudeness. To them, this is equivalent to showing someone your middle finger.
  • Proper Outfit – Dress properly especially when visiting a temple. The knees and shoulder must be covered.
  • PDA – Avoid kissing and hugging when in public as this is showing too much affection but merely holding hands will not be offensive at all.
  • Throwing and Pointing – Throwing something at someone or even pointing is considered rude in Thailand.
  • Monks – The monks are given high respect. Women are not allowed to touched them, lower your body when passing by one, and give them wide space.
  • Buddha – Taking pictures is not allowed unless it is stated otherwise and the religious image is prohibited as decoration or for tattoos.
