A report in Inquirer states that Edgar Erice, Caloocan 2nd District Representative raised the idea of making the capital’s busiest thoroughfare into a mas transport highway and only lets public utility vehicles (PUVs) to ply there during rush hours.

Erice proposed that all private vehicles must not enter EDSA from 6AM to 9AM and from 6PM to 9PM, which are rush hours; and allows PUVs like buses, jeepneys and the like, to enter the thoroughfare.

Erice further believed that this will ease the traffic at EDSA, futher noting that up to 300, 000 private vehicles enter the major road, while buses reach up to 8, 000.

He further said that the affected 300, 000 private vehicles shoul leave the house before 6AM or after 9AM, use alternative routes or simply use public transport.

As per the report, the proposal, which is immediate and temporary may be in effect until the construction of the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX)-South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) connector is complete and the Metro Rail Transit Line-3 is fixed.

For the motorcycles and transport network vehicle services however, this has yet to be examined whether or not they can or cannot enter the EDSA during rush hours. As for emergency vehicles like ambulances, they are excluded in the ban.

Rep. Erice further said that he aims to file a resolution on the scheme after having a discussion with Manny Lopez, House Metropolitan development committee chairman, which is set at the late September, further saying that he wants it implemented this year before the heavy traffic due to holiday season.
