Google Is Set To Ban Ads For Unproven or Experimental Medical Techniques
GOOGLE – The Multinational technological conglomerate announced to ban online ads with unproven medical treatments or techniques.
Google said that it would ban ads which promoted medical treatments like stem cell and gene therapy. They stated that they would ban ads without scientific backing.

Adrienne Biddings, policy adviser at Google said that they saw an increase in bad actors taking advantage of individuals by offering untested and deceptive treatments. He added that these types of ads which are potentially harmful have no place in their platforms.
On a blog post uploaded by Google, they stated that important medical discoveries often start as unproven ideas. They then said that they believe that the most reliable way to test and prove these ideas are through monitored clinical trials.
Deepak Srivastava, President of the International Society for Stem Cell Research said that Google’s new policy is much needed. He added that it is a welcome step to curb marketing of sketchy medical products such as unproven stem cell therapies.
According to the announcement, they would still allow ads for research in clinical trials. Clinician would also retain their ability to promote their finding to the public.

Google stated that it’s previous healthcare and medicines ads policy included topics like miracle cures and anti-vaccine misinformation. They added that the new rule would extend the policy to include scientifically unproven treatments and services.
The company did not disclose details on how it would evaluate the ads or the amount of ads to be removed as a result of the policy update. Google then said they would continue to update their policy as the field evolves.
