CIRCULATORY SYSTEM – Interesting Facts, Components, Function

What do we need to know about the circulatory system?

CIRCULATORY SYSTEM – Here are some interesting facts, components, and function of the circulatory system that we need to know.

The circulatory system is the organ system which allows blood to circulate in the body transporting nutrients (such as amino acids and electrolytes), oxygen, carbon dioxide, hormones, and blood cells. This all happens to provide nourishment, fight off diseases, stabilize temperature, and maintain homeostasis.

The four components of the circulatory system:

  1. Heart – To know more about the human heart, you may read: Different Heart Conditions You Don’t Know Yet and Causes, Signs, Symptoms, Treatment & Prevention Of Heart Diseases.
  2. Arteries – carrier of oxygen-rich blood away from the heart
  3. Veins – carrier of deoxygenated blood to the lungs where they receive oxygen
  4. Blood – means of transporting of almost everything within the body including hormones, nutrients, oxygen, antibodies, and other important things to keep it healthy.

Facts and Function:

  • The main function of this organ system is to transport gases, nutrients, electrolytes, wastes, and hormones to keep our body healthy and to keep it moving.
  • It starts with the heart where deoxygenated blood (containing carbon dioxide) goes to the right side of the heart and pumped to the lungs where exchange of gases take place. It is where the carbon dioxide in the blood was replaced with oxygen and then it goes back to the left side of the heart and from there, oxygenated blood is delivered to the tissues and returns again on the right side of the heart.
  • On average, the heart pumps about 100,000 times per day, pushing about 2,000 gallons (7,570 liters) of blood through a total of 60,000 miles (96,560 kilometers) of blood vessels.
  • It only takes 20 seconds for the blood to travel the entirety of the circulatory system according to Live Science.
