Bataan Rep. Geraldine Roman Wants Malls To Provide Gender-Neutral Bathrooms for LGBTQ
The lawmaker Bataan Rep. Geraldine Roman said that malls should also provide gender-neutral bathrooms for the LGBTQ community.
On Friday (August 16, 2019), Bataan Rep. Geraldine Roman wants malls to provide a gender-neutral bathroom to prevent the members of the LGBTQ community from unnecessary risks. The proposal came after a transgender woman used a men’s bathroom that opens herself up to unnecessary risks.
Earlier this week, a transgender woman identified as Gretchen Custodio Diez was barred from using the lady’s restroom at a mall in Quezon City. The 28-year-old latter was detained at the mall’s management over unjust vexation complaint.
Diez was eventually released and filed a complaint against the management of Farmers Plaza at the Araneta Center Cubao for allegedly violating the existing ordinance. The shopping mall also apologized to Diez and to the members of LGBTQ community.
The lawmaker said that the mall could be held liable over the incident and cited the 2014 anti-discrimination ordinance of Quezon City where the mall is located. The ordinance is urging the mall to provide a restroom for the third gender.
“Now, because they did not have a gender-neutral bathroom they could also be charged with not implementing a gender and development program which is also provided for in the Quezon City ordinance,” Roman said.
Roman also requested President Rodrigo Duterte to certify the bill as urgent for the good and protection of LGBTQ.
