YouTube Videos Featuring Cute Kids Are Clickbait, Study Says
Pew Research Center study shows that YouTube videos featuring cute kids and young children to attract viewers are clickbait.
Nowadays, YouTube is one of the most popular social media platforms all around the world used to watch videos. Even young children are already hooked in watching entertaining videos.
However, many YouTube videos are featuring young kids drawing almost triple the average views of the website’s other content. Videos showing young kids are among the platform’s most popular materials.
Recently, child advocates expressed its concern regarding the videos using children to attract an outsized amount of viewers.
Over the past few years, YouTube faced criticisms from politicians and parents groups for allegedly not implementing enough measures to protect the privacy of minors.
In 2018, several groups including Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood (CCFC) and Center for Digital Democracy went to Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to file a complaint.
The groups filed the complaint against YouTube parent company for allegedly violating the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act.
The complaint explained that the social media platform is earning a huge amount of cash by using children’s personal details.
“YouTube likes to pretend its not a site for children until it’s time to sell ads,” and “We have always been clear YouTube has never been for people under 13,” CCFC Executive Director Josh Golin said.
YouTube videos showing children singing, dressing up, and parenting tips are the most popular contents.
