Government Can Afford Salary Increase for Civil Servants, Finance Secretary Says
Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III said that the government can afford the new round of salary increase for public employees.
President Duterte is now pushing for the salary increase of government employees including nurses and teachers.
The proposed pay hike for civil servants is under the fifth round of the Salary Standardization Law (SSL).
The Department of Finance (DOF) secretary Dominguez explained that the government had some resources to finance the propose salary raise.
“We normally wait three to four years before moving to SSL 5. However, the President decided to propose the SSL. We have done the numbers … and we can afford it,” Dominguez said.
Mr. Duterte said on his fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA) that public school teachers and nurses deserved a pay hike.
The President explained that the increase is not that big but it could help the public servants to survive during these difficult times.
The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) had an initial estimate on the total cost of pay increase for the government workers, according to Dominguez.
