Illegal Manga Website Manager Arrested in Manila
The foreign manager of illegal manga website “Manga Mura (Manga village)” with over 100 million readers have been arrested in Manila.
The Japanese-German-Israeli fugitive Romi Hoshino or known as Zakay Romi has been arrested by the authorities at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3.
BI intelligence officer Bobby Raquepo said that the suspect has been arrested when he was set to leave for Hong Kong.
The 28-year-old foreigner was brought to the Bureau of Immigration (BI) detention facility in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City.
The Japanese Embassy in Manila seeks help from the Immigration Bureau to arrest the foreign fugitive over massive violation of copyright.
“His presence in the country is a risk to public safety and security, and [he] will likely be deported to Japan,” Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente said.
Hoshino runs an illegal manga comic library “Manga Mura (Manga village)” containing around 60,000 manga Japanese comics.
The suspect made the manga available to the public for free resulting to the loss of Manga publishers of about $2.94 billion.
The fugitive operated the illegal manga site in January 2016 and shuts down in April 2018 due to copyright violation.
