FOOD POISONING – Here are some important things and details you probably need to know about the alarming case of food poisoning.

Food-borne illness or also known as food poisoning is caused by bacteria and other toxins from contaminated foods. The most common symptoms of this status include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, loss of appetite, mild fever, and weakness.

This becomes threatening if the diarrhea lasts for more than three days, fever reaching 101.5 degree Fahrenheit, difficult to see or speak, bloody urine and among other factors. In any case of these symptoms, the common or the threatening ones, contact the doctor right away.

CAUSES:

  • Norovirus & Salmonella (responsible for hospitalization caused by bacteria, parasites, mold, toxins, contaminants, allergens) – Noro are usually found in oysters, fruits, and vegetables while the salmonella is in eggs, meat, and dairy products.
  • Clostridium perfringens – Meat and poultry contains this.
  • Campylobacter – They are found in under cooked meat and contaminated water.
  • Staphylococcus – Found in animal products.

PREVENTION:

  • Avoid food contact with some parts of the body.
  • Wash hands all the time especially after using the toilet, after sneezing, smoking, smoking, blowing of nose, eating.
  • Avoid preparing food if you’re sick.
  • Be sure that seal is unbroken when buying foods.
  • Always clean the utensils after using.
  • Do not consume foods that are outdated, with unusual odor, and spoiled.

TREATMENT:

  • Keep hydrated
  • Drink sports drink high in electrolytes
  • Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine
  • Fruit juice and coconut water to restore carbohydrates
  • Over-the-counter medicines
  • Plenty of rest
  • Avoid dairy products and foods with spicy content, high-sugar content, and fried
  • Try to eat gelatin, bananas, rice, oatmeal, bland potatoes, and foods that can easily be digested

Some cases of food poisoning can be treated at home and could last up to three to five days. In any case of worsening to worst situation, it may require hospitalization for better and more effective medication and treatment.
