STATES OF MATTER – In this topic, we will discuss the meaning of the three states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas and their examples each.
But first let us know what matter is.
Matter
It is basically everything around us. Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. The atoms and compounds that build what we see and touch are all made up of matter.
Now there are 3 basic states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas.
Solid
It is a substance of matter which does not need a container since it has a definite shape and definite volume and its molecules are strong enough. Solid matter are also unable to move freely except to vibrate.
Examples:
- baseball
- rock
- wood
- gold
- brick
Liquid
A fluid substance which has a definite volume but no definite shape, thus, requiring a container to form its shape. Unlike solids, since it has no exact shape, its molecules is constantly moving.
Examples:
- Water
- Milk
- Blood
- Coffee
- Soda
Gas
A substance that neither has definite shape nor has a definite volume as their molecules have weak or no bonds at all. To fill the shape it was given, gases tend to expand.
Examples:
- Air
- Helium
- Nitrogen
- Freon
- Carbon dioxide
