As one of the major branches of science, mathematics and logic fall under “Formal science”, which are concerned more with the properties of formal systems based on definitions and rules instead of validating theories based on observations in the real world.
Mathematics
The language of science. It is the study of quantity, structure, space, and change; and look for patterns and make guesses. Mathematics have the following fields:
- Arithmetic – the most basic and oldest branch of mathematics. It is the study of quantity, specifically in the combining of numbers. Operations include addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
- Algebra – the study of the rules of operations and relations, and the constructions and concepts arising from them.
- Analysis/Calculus – specializes in limits, functions, derivatives, integrals, and infinite series. Calculus id the study of change.
- Category theory – involves the analysis of properties of mathematical structures in terms of collections of objects and arrows
- Discrete mathematics – includes the study of integers, graphs, and statements in logic.
- Geometry – the study of shapes size, relative position of figures, and the properties of space; and one of the oldest branches in mathematics.
- Topology – similar to geometry but differs in terms of studying unchanging properties even when objects are deformed.
- Trigonometry – the study of triangles and the relationships between their sides and the angles between these sides.
Logic
The study of principles study of the principles of valid inference and correct reasoning. It is studied mainly in the disciplines of philosophy, mathematics, semantics, and computer science.
