Negros School Canteen Uses Bamboo Mugs, Coconut Shell Bowls

NEGROS SCHOOL – A high school in Cauayan, Negros Occidental use bamboo as mugs and coconut shells as a bowl in their canteen.

In the Philippines, several establishments have banned the use of plastic. Some restaurants or fast food chains have implemented the banning of plastic for utensils or plastic bags.

We can’t deny that plastic objects have become customary in our daily life from eating to drinking.

We should always remember that utilizing a huge amount of plastic every day can affect the whole planet. Plastic objects can put the marine ecosystem in serious danger.

Fortunately, there are scientist and organizations from different countries around the world try to minimize or eliminate the excessive use of plastic.

Meanwhile, a high school in Cauayan, Negros Occidental in the Philippines thought that it’s much better for the school to just use bamboo cups and coconut shell mugs instead of plastic.

On the Facebook Page of DYHB Tatak RMN, the whole Bulata National High School (BNHS) is now plastic-free. Their canteen only uses bamboo and coconut shell as mugs and bowls.

Banana leaves were also used to as plates, serve snacks in the morning and afternoon.

The principal of the school, Eiggy Duller Yap, said his seminar at Marine and Wild Camp in Danjugan Island inspired him to implement a plastic-free in their canteen.

Their plastic-free school was inspired by the “Wala Usik Sari-Sari Store” which is a program of the Philippine Reef and Rainforest Conservation Foundation, Inc. thorough ‘Sea Wast Education to Eradicate Plastic.’

On the latter part of the caption, the walls of the school were painted by the volunteer artist from the Association of Negros Artist.

It can be seen on the photo that they draw the colorful marine life themed: “More Fish, Not Plastic.”
