Last year, Philippines’ football team ‘Azkals’ was brought to the Asian Cup by the winning strikes of professional football player Phil Younghusband.

For China, the decision to let them host the 2023 Asian Cup could serve as a steppingstone or a “launchpad” for their only football team.

Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim al-Khalifa – Asian football chief – said this last Tuesday (June 4, 2019).

China initially confirmed the decision to let them host the 2023 Asian Cup during the Extraordinary Congress as the AFC in Paris. They took it after every country that had interests in taking it let go of the role.

Sheikh Salman is currently the second in-command of Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), he won again during the voting for a four year term as president of AFC on April.

He says that China’s turn to hold the event is “..an important moment for football in Asia and beyond.”

Salman also talked about football’s chance to bring out potentials from Chinese athletes in his statement:

“Football has the chance to unlock the potential that exists in the world’s most populous country. We have seen the rise of the game under the direction and investment of the Chinese government. Now, we have the chance with this Asian Cup to develop a sure legacy for the global game.”

Salman says the upcoming Asian Cup could serve as a “launchpad” the football team in China. Seemingly meaning that the Asian Cup could propel the Chinese football team’s career.

This is based on the article from Remate.

South Korea let go of their opportunity to host the event las month, leaving China as the only candidate to hold the huge event.

Other countries such as Thailand and Indonesia also showed interest in taking the role but eventually changed their decisions.

That is all there is to it, at least for now. We’ll post updates as soon as we got them.
