These Dismayed Filipinos Looked Up ‘Migrate’ Online After 2019 Election Initial Results

DISMAYED FILIPINOS – Following the release of initial results of the 2019 election, dismayed voting and non-voting Filipinos looked up ‘migrate’ online.

After the voting period last Monday (May 13, 2019), millions of Filipinos followed the ballot counts online and on television for 2019 Election partial results.

However, it seems like some of the Filipinos aren’t happy seeing the partial results. Looking at Google Trends data as of last Monday night, a hefty number of Filipinos looked up the keywords ‘migrate’ and ‘migrating’ following the election.

Data science & analytics training provider Isaac Reyes from DataSeer revealed in a conversation with ABS CBN News that there could be a casual connection between the recent poll results and the surge of the keyword’s searches.

Reyes explained his observation in his statement:

“The sheer magnitude of the spike and the fact that the increased search volume occurred specifically in the hours following the release of the preliminary election results makes it likely that there was a causal relationship between the election results and increased Philippines search terms relating to migrating abroad.”

Reyes also said that he only conducted the data analysis on Google Trends after a friend of him complained on Facebook.

He says he saw a Facebook post made by friend that seemingly complains about the recent poll results and looking to move to a foreign country. Although he saw through the humor in the post, he said he wondered if there are citizens who actually have ‘given up’ on the Philippines because of the results that’s apparently upsetting for them.

This is according to an article from ABS CBN News.

Reyes reportedly looked into Google Trends to gather real data about the issue. He also said that the results were “far more extreme” than his expectation.

Google Trends data also revealed the countries where most Filipinos considered moving into. Specifically, the top picked destinations were: Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

The areas where most residents considered moving were: Central Luzon, Metro Manila and CALABARZON.

That is all there is to it, at least for now. We’ll post updates as soon as we got them.
