Substandard Steel Bars In Last Year’s Test Buy

A Huge Portion Of Steel Bars In Last Year’s Test Buy Were Substandard

Poorly built buildings and substandard material could also be accounted for the previously recorded structural damages brought by the recent earthquake that struck Luzon.

Philippine Iron and Steel Institute reported that 46 of the 115 steel bars that were bought from various producers across the country for inspection were substandard. Confirmed by the Philippine Iron and Steel Institute president himself, Roberto Cola.

There are countless studies and educational articles about the danger that may come with the use of substandard materials in construction.

Some of the dangers were:

  • building collapse
  • structural deformation
  • wall cracks
  • leaks
  • flooding

In a conversation with DZMM, Roberto Cola explained the processes of determining the steel qualities. Also, it was revealed that substandard materials were distributed across Northern Luzon.

Meanwhile, most of the substandard materials were bought from local steel producers and manufacturers that utilize induction furnaces. Poor performing induction furnaces can barely remove impurities from raw untreated steel.

This is according to the article from ABS CBN News. Based on the article,

The Department of Trade and Industry or DTI are still confirming the information, according to Roberto Cola.

That is all there is to it, at least for now. We’ll post updates as soon as we got them.
