Several individuals have already died of measles and, currently, more than a thousand people around the country are suffering from it. One hospital in Manila, San Lazaro Hospital, is even now filled with patients suffering from measles.
Measles, a viral infection that can easily be transmitted and known for the red rash, is preventable. The DOH has previously called the attention of parents who hold the safety and future of their children.
Health Secretary Francisco Duque III asked the parents to shy away the issue with measles from the Dengvaxia controversy. He assured the public that the vaccine for measles is safe and effective.
Most patients with measles are children who have not undergone vaccination. The DOH is calling the parents to have their children vaccinated as free basic immunization is available in public hospitals and health centers.
Based on a recent social media post of The Philippine Star on Twitter, public hospitals and health centers offer free basic immunization to children who are age five(5) years old and below.
It is also stated that the basic vaccination includes the immunization against measles. According to DOH, vaccination is the only way to prevent a child from acquiring measles.
Based on the post, the 1st dose against measles is given at 9 months old and the 2nd dose is at 12 months old or when the child reaches one year old.
