EDIT: We are NOT saying that Grab is the only party liable for what happened to Marko. We have been doing something about the other drivers involved in the accident, but cannot talk about it in the public sphere.

To all Grab drivers and riders, alam niyo bang kung madisgrasya kayo on a Grab ride at kailangan niyo magpagamot sa ospital, P200k lang ang maximum budget nila to help you dahil under their policy, hindi sila liable sa anumang mangyari sa inyo during a ride?

Many people have been asking for the whole story of Marko’s car accident. Nanahimik kami for almost one month to give Grab a chance to make a decent offer that Marko deserves after the accident. But now we’re speaking up. Here’s what really happened:

On Oct 26, my 20-year-old cousin Marko and his friend Alia booked a ride using Grab going to Taft. Marko took a nap on his ride; safe naman kasi trusted ang Grab diba? Sa corner ng Taft and UN Ave. nangyari yung aksidente involving another car. The Grab Marko was riding collided with another car turning left at a no left turn corner.

Ang hirap maimagine ano nangyari kay Marko inside that Grab given that he was in the middle seat asleep. Di niya nadepensahan sarili niya, di niya na-control as he was thrown back and forth sa lakas ng dalawang impact nung aksidente. The three other people involved in the accident (the two drivers and Alia) sustained minor to no injury.

He had to go through a very complicated brain surgery just to have a slim chance of survival. His brain stem was already damaged severely, and hanggang ngayon, in critical condition parin si Marko sa ICU. If he survives at all, he will have to face deficits because of the brain injury, including loss of all learning and comprehension, weakness in his limbs and spastic body movements na posibleng hindi na pwede i-therapy, at iba pa na hindi pa masabi ng doktor. From now on, he will wake up everyday confused about what and who he sees, and he will feel like he is hearing a foreign language pag kinakausap siya.

Grab has made several offers but none of which can cover his total running bill at the hospital. Marko lost his future, his chance to get a job and earn for himself and his family. He lost his capacity to learn, to understand, to recognize his loved ones. Ang sakit kasi he is alive, but not living a life he deserves. And they can’t even shoulder all of the hospital costs of an injury na nangyari while on a Grab ride?

Grab speaks of giving us peace of mind as passengers. Grab speaks of safety as a priority. And Grab speaks of #MaginhawangBukas.
