TIME Magazine Features President Duterte Among Strongmen On Their Cover Story

TIME magazine international edition has featured President Rodrigo Duterte among the world’s strongmen on their cover story.

TIME’s article entitled “Rise of the Strongman” features the tough-talking personalities who promised to protect their people.

“In every region of the world, changing times have boosted public demand for more muscular, assertive leadership. These tough-talking populists promise to protect ‘us’ from ‘them.’ Depending on who’s talking, ‘them’ can mean the corrupt elite or the grasping poor; foreigners or members of racial, ethnic or religious minorities. Or disloyal politicians, bureaucrats, bankers or judges. Or lying reporters,” TIME article reads quoted by Philstar.

American political scientist Ian Bremmer wrote the article and described Mr. Duterte as an ex-mayor who usually talked like a mob boss than a president.

Bremmer said that Duterte was elected into power to address the increasing rate of street crime and due to his campaign promise to eliminate the illegal drugs in the country.

Duterte rose to fame because of his anti-illegal drug campaign linked to Extrajudicial Killings (EJKs), which allegedly took the lives of more than 4, 000 suspected drug personalities.

However, the political scientist said that he did not include the 45th US President Donald Trump on the cover story, but he’d like to be.

The magazine also features the Russian President Vladimir Putin, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, and Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
