DUTERTE – Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte declared the withdrawal of his country from the treaty that established the International Criminal Court or ICC.

As the head of the country, Pres. Duterte made a declaration that the Philippines withdraws from the Rome Statute “effective immediately” based on a recent report in Inquirer.

According to the report, the Rome Statute is the treaty that formed the International Criminal Court. Pres. Duterte cited in his statement that ‘baseless’ attacks done to his person.

The Philippine President stressed that the acts against him violate the “due process and constitutional presumption of innocence”.

“I therefore declare and forthwith give notice, as the President of the Republic of the Philippines, that the Philippines is withdrawing its ratification of the Rome Statute effective immediately,” the Philippine President expressed in his statement which was recently released based on the report.

“Baseless, unprecedented and outrageous attacks on my person as against my administration, engineered by the officials of the United Nations, as well as the attempt by the [ICC] special prosecutor to place my person within the jurisdiction of the [ICC],” he also said.

Based on the report, Pres. Duterte also asserted that, in the Philippines, the ICC treaty is not “effective nor enforceable” as it was not published in a newspaper that widely circulates or in the Official Gazette. Reportedly, it was on August 23, 2011 when Philippines signed the ICC treaty.
