Local News Website Rappler Seeks Legal Remedies Over Revocation Of Registration

The social media website Rappler will seek legal remedies over SEC’s order to revoke its registration and said that its operation will continue.

On Monday (January 15, 2018), the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) has ordered the closure of the local news outlet ‘Rappler’ through the revocation of its registration over alleged violation of the constitutional restriction on foreign ownership of mass media.

Rappler was allegedly sold its control to foreign media Omidyar Network, a fund created by eBay founder and entrepreneur Pierre Omidyar.

However, the news site denied the accusations and insist that the company was still 100 percent Filipino-owned.

Rappler editor Chay Hofileña said it’s going to be business as usual as their reporters pursue to cover affairs and write stories until the final revocation of their registration.

Hofileña cried over an alleged political attack and would file a motion for reconsideration to pursue legal remedies.

“There’s supposed to be a legal process. We will go to the proper courts to present our case, file necessary motions. If warranted, we will even go to the Supreme Court,” Hofileña said quoted by Philstar.

Rappler chief Maria Ressa was also asking for the support of the public for free and independent journalism and they wanted the government to respect the rule of law.
