Magnitude 6.2 Earthquake Jolts Iran Injuring At Least 18 People
A magnitude 6.2 earthquake has struck Kerman, the southeastern province of Iran injuring at least 18 people, according to Iranian seismological center.
On Wednesday (December 13, 2017 – PH-Time), the Iranian seismological center announced that Iran’s southeastern province of Kerman has been struck by a magnitude 6.2 quake causing a minimal damage in the area.
The powerful tremor struck around 12:13 pm with an epicenter of about 50 kilometers north of Kerman’s provincial capital and about 800 kilometers from Tehran.
The quake that struck Hejdak and Ravar in Kerman province leave at least 18 people wounded and damaged old houses in 6 villages.
Iranian officials also announced that the cl(–foul word(s) removed–) in various schools and universities in the quake-affected areas were cancelled.
The US Geological Survey recorded aftershocks of 5.9 magnitudes and 6.0 magnitude about 65 kilometers from Kernan.
“Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are extremely vulnerable to earthquake shaking, though some resistant structures exist,” USGS said.
On Tuesday (December 12, 2017), Kermanshah, Iran has been also struck by a strong 7.3 magnitude quake, which took the lives of at least 620 people.
