Mt. Kanlaon Placed By Phivolcs Under Alert Level 2 After Phreatic Explosion
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has raised Mt. Kanlaon at alert level 2 after a phreatic explosion.
On Saturday morning (December 09, 2017), Kanlaon volcano had a phreatic eruption around 9:47 am, according to Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum.
Solidum said that the irregularities of Kanlaon volcano were caused by a magma moving up between 20 to 30 kilometers in depth from the crater. He also explained the definition of a phreatic eruption.
“Kapag sinabi natin na Phreatic erruption ang sanhi ng pagsabog ay ‘yung tubig na napapakuluan nagiging usok o steam at kapag may pressure, sumasabog po ito at ang dinadala niyang abo ay luma,” said by Solidum.
The Phivolcs executive explained that the explosion was not severe, but he advised the residents and visitors to avoid going near the volcano’s summit.
Kanlaon volcano has been placed under alert level 2 and the 4-kilometer permanent danger zone from the summit should be observed by the residents, according to Solidum.
Ground movements and rumbling sound for 10 minutes have been detected by the volcanology agency’s seismic instruments.
A barangay near the Kanlaon volcano was also affected by the ash falls, according to Solidum.
