BREAKING NEWS! 6.0-Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Papua New Guinea

A 6.0-magnitude earthquake has hit the Papua New Guinea.

PAPUA NEW GUINEA – A 6.0-magnitude earthquake shakes off the Papua New Guinea on Friday, December 1, says US seismologists.

According to a report from the ABS-CBN News, 6.0-magnitude earthquake hit off the coast of Papua New Guinea Friday but there were no immediate damages that have been reported nor tsunami warning.

The United States Geological Survey announced that it has a depth of 52 kilometers (32 miles) about 59.1 kilometers from the nearest town of Finschhafen in Morobe province.

The earthquake hit within three kilometers of the shoreline, with the potential for damage up to 45 kilometers away.

Geoscience seismologist Eddie Leask told AFP, “There is potential for some damage to the local towns. Magnitude 6.0 is reasonable in its shaking… so you do have high-energy shaking in the local areas that can cause some issues.”

Shakings, as per the source, is common in PNG as it sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire which is a spot for seismic activity due to friction between tectonic plates.
