JV Ejercito Acquitted By Sandiganbayan From Anomalous Firearms Deal

Senator JV Ejercito Acquitted From Anomalous Purchase Of High-Powered Firearms

Senator Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito has been acquitted by Sandiganbayan from its malversation case over his anomalous firearms deal.

In 2008, it can be remembered that Senator JV Ejercito faces a malversation case regarding the alleged anomalous firearms deals worth P2.1 million. The anomalous deal allegedly happened during his term as the mayor of San Juan City.

On Thursday (August 10, 2017), the Sixth Division ruled in a 32-page decision that the charges filed against Senator Ejercito were unable to prove that he is guilty over the accusations against him. He has been acquitted beyond a reasonable doubt.

“Let it be stressed that this verdict of acquittal is based on the failure of the prosecution to present proof beyond reasonable doubt that the accused indeed used the 2008 Calamity Fund of San Juan City in the procurement and payment of the subject firearms,”  said in the ruling.

The lawmaker allegedly connived with San Juan City officials for the purchase of P2.1 million worth of high-powered firearms last February-August 2008, based on the case information issued by the Ombudsman.

San Juan City’s government fund meant for calamities and disasters although there’s no state of calamity announced during that time was the fund used to purchase the high-powered firearms, according to the Ombudsman.

The firearms deal was done hastily without bidding or evaluation of supplier’s qualifications.
