Proposed Abolition of CHR Only A Joke, President Duterte Says
President Rodrigo Roa Duterte clarified that his threat of abolishing the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) was only a joke.
Previously, two government agencies were planning to abolish by the Duterte administration. The two agencies were identified as the Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG) and Commission on Human Rights (CHR).
The president was planning to dissolve the human rights commission after criticizing his controversial anti-illegal drug campaign amid Extrajudicial Killing (EJK) and accusing him of abusing human rights.
The proposed abolition of PCGG and CHR was opposed by the former President Benigno Aquino III stating that the human rights commission were still needed by people in this imperfect society.
On Wednesday (August 02, 2017), during the anniversary of Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), President Duterte clarified that his threat to abolish the human rights commission was only a joke. He also said that he will need the permission of Congress to abolish the human rights commission.
The threat of proposed abolition the CHR came after the second State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Duterte last July 24, 2017.
Mr. Duterte also clarified that he was also joking when he said that the Office of the Ombudsman needs to ask his permission first before conducting an investigation to his officials, particularly on police and militaries.
