North Korea Asked By ASEAN Ministers To Exercise Self-Restraint To Avoid Escalating Tensions

The ASEAN ministers have asked the North Korea to exercise self-restraint to prevent escalating tension on the Korean Peninsula.

On Friday (April 28, 2017), the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) foreign ministers expressed their concern over the increasing tension on the Korean Peninsula after North Korea launched 5 nuclear tests and 2 of them were conducted last year.

Previously, North Korea also gets failed on a missile test when one of their missiles suddenly explodes 4 to 5 seconds after it was launch. The incident takes places during the North’s show of strength and to mark the 105th birth anniversary of Kim II Sung, the grandfather of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un.

“ASEAN strongly urges the [North Korea] to comply fully with its obligations arising from all relevant United Nations Security Council Resolutions and international laws in the interest of maintaining international peace and security,”  said by ASEAN foreign ministers in a statement quoted by Philstar.

The communist country was asked by the foreign ministers to refrain from their careless actions that could increase the tension on the Korean Peninsula. The denuclearization of Korean Peninsula was supported by the ASEAN to defuse tensions and to implement peace and stability in the nation.

North Korea’s nuclear and ballistic missile program can cause a large impact on the region and its nearby areas. The communist country was also seeking support from ASEAN countries in its row with the United States to prevent “nuclear holocaust.”
