Grilled, Barbecued Meat Increases Risk Of Breast Cancer

Risk Of Breast Cancer Increases By Consuming Barbecued, Grilled, And Smoked Meat

According to a study in the United States, the risk of breast cancer among women increases by consuming smoked, barbecued, and grilled meat.

Most of us love to eat barbecued, smoked, and grilled meat because of its delicious and savory taste. This cooking option has negative effects on the body but the smoking meat might be the worst among the three options.

Consuming smoked meat of pork, lamb, and the beef was linked to the increased risk of death among individuals and increases the risk of developing breast cancer. Smoked and grilled meats contain many carcinogens.

Carcinogens are toxic chemicals that can be usually found on air pollution and cigarette smoking. Exposure with this element can cause the development of breast cancer among women, according to a lead study author Humberto Parada, a researcher at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) is a type of carcinogens that can be produced on meat through grilling and smoking, compared to other cooking methods such as frying. Women who rarely eat smoked or grilled meat has the lesser risk of developing breast cancer.

Journal of the National Cancer Institute researcher’s reported that 31 percent of women diagnosed with breast cancer died from consuming barbecued meat before and after diagnosis. Chicken and fish contain lesser fats compared to meat.

Reducing meat intake and increasing the consumption of fish, vegetables, or chicken can help us to prevent the development of cancer. Limitation of food intake and being careful on the type of foods being eaten can help us to maintain the body’s health.

Dr. Mingyang Song, a researcher at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and Harvard University also suggest that women should be aware of their cooking methods in order to lessen the exposure to carcinogenic chemicals.

“These chemicals can be produced from wood smoke or when fat and juices from meat grilled directly over an open fire drip onto the fire, creating flames and smoke,” said by Song quoted by GMA.
