The Boeing 737 DHL cargo jet was attempting to land at Italy’s Bergamo airport after flying from Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris, France when the aircraft broke through the fence of the runway and ended up on the highway just after 4 a.m., said Italian aviation officials.

The ASL Airlines Hungary cargo plane came to rest on the road next to Orio al Serio International Airport near the city of Bergamo.

The cargo plane encounter the problem due to apparent bad weather.

The crew were unharmed when they escaped the plane. No vehicles were on the highway at the time of the incident, according to aviation officials.

Plane had touched down after flight but crashed through barriers onto busy road.

A message on the airport’s website read: “We inform passengers that flights may suffer delays or cancellations on departure and arrival due to operational restrictions at the airport.”

Dramatic pictures show the nose of the ASL Airlines Boeing 737-400, which was chartered by courier firm DHL, wedged across an airport ring road.

Other photos show the path of destruction left by the jet as it skidded off the runway and across an area of grass.
