Chinese Ambassador Zhao Jianhua to Duterte: “A strong man with principle.”

Chinese Ambassador Zhao Praised President-elect Duterte

“A strong man with principle.” These were the words by Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Zhao Jianhua when he was asked about the presumptive president of the republic of the Philippines Rodrigo Rody Duterte. Duterte clearly characterized the type of leadership that the Chinese government would like to work with most especially when it comes to improving the bilateral relations between the Philippines and China.

Ambassador Zhao to Duterte

Ambassador Zhao said this during the handover of the donations from the Chinese Embassy in Manila to the University of the Philippines with regards to the losses of UP in the recent Fire incident.

Ambassador Zhao is in fact, so eager to talk with the incoming president about the peaceful way to solve the territorial claims of both China and the Philippines.

“Let me quote what Chairman Mao Zedong, the founding father of the People’s Republic of China, had said: ’10,000 years are too long. Seize the moment, seize the hour.’ I would say that two years is too long. Seize the moment, seize the hour.”

Next month as Duterte will take over as the country’s Chief Executive, Ambassador Zhao showed confidence that the relationship between China and the Philippines will “get better.”

“We are glad that the President-elect has already opened the option for direct bilateral negotiation talks and we welcome that…”

“It’s always been China’s policy to settle disputes and differences through bilateral channels.” Ambassador Zhao told reporters in an ambush interview in the sidelines of the ceremony.

“We are looking forward to working with the incoming president and his team to explore the possibility of returning to bilateral talks,” Ambassador Zhao said.
