Marcos Celebrates Alex Eala After Stunning Wimbledon History
ALEX EALA – History has been made once again as Filipino tennis sensation Alex Eala reached a milestone no other Filipino has accomplished at Wimbledon.
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has commended Filipino tennis sensation Alexandra Eala for reaching another remarkable milestone after becoming the first Filipino to advance to the fourth round of Wimbledon, one of the most prestigious tournaments in the sport.
In a message shared on social media on Sunday, the President praised Eala’s historic achievement, describing it as a source of immense pride and inspiration for the entire nation. He emphasized that her success has united Filipinos in celebration as she continues to make history on the international tennis stage.
“There are days when an entire nation celebrates together. Today is one of those days,” the President said.
“Congratulations, Alex Eala! You have become the first Filipino ever to reach the fourth round of Wimbledon, and the whole country couldn’t be prouder.”
Eala, who is currently ranked No. 29 in the world, secured the biggest victory of her career after defeating defending Wimbledon champion and world No. 3 Iga Swiatek of Poland in straight sets, 7-6(9), 6-2, during their third-round match on Saturday in London. The triumph extended her dream campaign at the famed All England Club and marked another historic chapter in Philippine tennis.
Marcos also recalled his earlier statement about Eala’s rising career, saying her recent accomplishments only reinforce his belief that she is destined for even greater success in the future.
“I said before that this was only the beginning. Watching you today, I couldn’t be more convinced. You’re just getting started,” he said.
The President likewise expressed his gratitude to the young tennis star for motivating the next generation of Filipinos to pursue ambitious goals and believe that they can compete on the world’s biggest stage.
“The whole Filipino nation is cheering you on. Thank you for showing young Filipinos that they, too, can dream big and reach the world’s biggest stage,” he said.

At just 21 years old, Eala has already rewritten Philippine tennis history by becoming the first Filipino in the Open Era to reach the second week of a Grand Slam tournament. Against Swiatek, a six-time Grand Slam champion and reigning Wimbledon titleholder, Eala displayed remarkable composure by saving two set points in the opening-set tiebreak before taking control of the second set to complete the stunning upset.
Eala now shifts her focus to the fourth round, where she is set to face Italy’s world No. 13 Jasmine Paolini, the runner-up at Wimbledon in 2024, as she aims to continue her extraordinary run in the tournament.
