Gretchen Ho Survives Terrifying Face-to-Face Encounter w/ a Spotted Hyena
GRETCHEN HO – A breathtaking wildlife adventure almost took a terrifying turn after Gretchen Ho found herself just meters away from one of Africa’s most dangerous predators.
Former TV5 news presenter Gretchen Ho experienced a heart-stopping wildlife encounter after coming face-to-face with a spotted hyena during a visit to the Timbavati Game Reserve in South Africa.
In her latest Instagram post on Friday, July 3, Gretchen shared a video capturing the intense moment when a lone spotted hyena slowly approached the area where she and her group were standing during an open bush walk.
Describing the tense situation, Gretchen wrote, “The lone Spotted Hyena was studying us carefully, trying to smell and look for signs of vulnerability. But our tracker Oscar looked the Hyena in the eye, as he stood tall. And slowly, the Hyena walked away.”
Her account revealed how the group’s experienced tracker remained calm and composed, preventing the situation from escalating. Instead of showing fear, the tracker confidently faced the animal until it eventually lost interest and retreated.
Gretchen also shared what their guide had explained about the encounter. “Brett [our guide] told us the Hyena wouldn’t be foolish enough to charge 8 fully grown humans. Had we been with a young child, though, that kid might have been attacked.”
According to Gretchen, this is one of the reasons why Timbavati Game Reserve strictly implements a minimum age requirement for participants joining game drives and open bush walks. The policy is designed to minimize risks, especially since young children may be more vulnerable in close encounters with wild animals.
She also emphasized an important safety rule that visitors should always remember whenever they encounter potentially dangerous wildlife. According to Gretchen, the key is to remain calm and never run, as sudden movements could provoke an attack or trigger a predator’s instinct to chase.
The frightening experience served as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of wildlife and the importance of following the guidance of trained experts during safari adventures. Although the encounter lasted only a short time, it highlighted the fine line between awe and danger when humans enter the natural habitat of wild animals.
Spotted hyenas are known for their incredibly powerful jaws and aggressive hunting behavior. They are among Africa’s most formidable predators and scavengers, making close encounters with them especially dangerous. Fortunately, Gretchen and the rest of her group remained safe, turning what could have been a terrifying incident into an unforgettable wildlife experience.
