3-Hour Rotating Brownouts Implemented by Meralco in Metro Manila & Nearby Areas

The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) announced on Thursday, July 17, 2014, that the will be implementing a three-hour rotating brownout in Metro Manila and nearby areas particularly in the areas of Bulacan after the company experienced transmission problems brought about by Bagyong Glenda that hits Metro Manila on Wednesday.

Meralco issued the following statement on their official website and through their official social media accounts: “A 3-hour emergency Manual Load Dropping/rotating brownout was implemented due to the inability of plants in the south area to generate because of transmission outages,” Meralco said in a statement.

According to Meralco parts of Manila, Makati, Quezon City, Pasay City and Bulacan will be affected with the 3-hour rotating brownouts to be implemented by Meralco.

Although Meralco noted earlier that the company has restored energy in majority of its franchise but a rotating brownout is still needed to accommodate all their subscribers.

In an earlier post on Meralco’s Twitter account, they noted that as of 7:00 AM on Thursday, a total of 64% OF Meralco franchise area has power. On Wednesday, Meralco announced that 86% or aound 4.6 million of their customers were affected by power outages. Most of the areas affected by power outages were in Metro Manila, Cavite, Quezon and parts of Rizal and Batangas.

In order to restore the power lines affected by Bagyong Glenda, Meralco has begun clearing operations and repair of its distribution facilities, including poles, transformers, wires and subtransmission lines.

Meralco also asked the public to remain patient, with the 3-hour rotating brownouts in some areas of Metro Manila and nearby provinces. The company also noted that right now, the estimated time of restoration is still unclear.

Meanwhile the national Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) stated earlier that its transmission lines in Southern Luzon remained down due to the devastation brought by Bagyong Glenda.
