Cebu and Bohol Classes Suspended on Wednesday Due to Earthquake

The strong 7.2 magnitude earthquake that hit the Visayas on Tuesday prompted the local officials of both the province of Cebu and Bohol to suspend classes on Wednesday October 16, as areas recover from the incident.

The Department of Education announces that classes in all levels in Bohol and Cebu both private and public schools are cancelled for Wednesday. Aside from Bohol and Cebu, Dumaguete City local government also declared suspension of classes.

The Province of Cebu and Bohol have already put their respective province under State of Calamity, a few hours after the tremors hit the central Visayas region.

Several government buildings in Cebu such as the Cebu City Hall were damaged, as well as commercial establishments like the Ayala Center in Cebu, the Cebu Doctor’s University and Hospital, and the century-old Basilica del Sto. Niño.

Aside from the suspension of classes in all levels in Cebu City, the Cebu Provincial Government also announced that the Mactan Cebu International Airport inbound and outbound flights are 4:00 PM due to minor structural damages.

With the declaration of the suspension of classes in Cebu, Governor Hilario Davide III ordered the district offices of the Department of Education and the Department of Public Works and Highways are urged to immediately conduct on site assessment on the proper certifications as to the safety and soundness of government school buildings and structures will be obtained.
