The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) made an announcement on Monday, April 15 about their two new transportation projects after the successful test-run of the AGT Projects at UP-Diliman.
The latest projects of the DOST were the “Road Train” and the remodeling of the Philippine National Railways (PNR’s) idle trains as part of DOST’s Advanced Transport Program.
According to DOST, the Road Train is composed of up to five interconnected coaches with each one capable of holding up to 120 people and will be traveling with the use of rubber tires. It will not be dependent on electricity but a diesel-electric hybrid system.
The DOST also announced that they have partnered with the PNR to retrofit 40 idle trains donated by the Japanese government. Their engineers are currently remodeling the coaches and overhaul the power systems to reactivate the trains and make them suited for PNR tracks.
The top two priority projects of the DOST are scheduled to produce prototypes by the end of 2013.
